of deception by the British and Americans to deceive, first, the
Germans and Japanese during World War II, and then, the Soviets

cleverness and enterprise puts right a springhouse knocked off its
foundations by August 2001 flooding
GREENEVILLE On Aug. 4 of 2001, as floodwaters
swept across Greene County in one of the worst widespread floods
in recent history, the old springhouse that stands behind the historic
Doak House Museum at Tusculum College was washed off its foundation,
and the foundation itself was partly destroyed. [06/27/02]

receives grant to integrate community-based research into course
work
GREENEVILLE Tusculum College has received a $5,000 grant
to help integrate community-based research into course curricula.
Implementing and strengthening community-based research on the Tusculum
campus is the purpose of the grant from the Corella and Bertram
F. Bonner Foundation and the Corporation for National Service Learn
& Serve America. The college's Service-Learning Center applied for
the grant, which was provided through Just Connections, an organization
dedicated to invigorating grass roots democracy among residents

Peace activist speaks to Tusculum class
GREENEVILLE A teenage Clare Hanrahan marched through Memphis
as part of a silent procession after the assassination of Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. there in 1968. That march began Hanrahan's life
of activism, primarily in support of peace and social justice. Hanrahan
described her life as an activist and her beliefs as a guest lecturer
April 29 in an English Composition and Research class at Tusculum
College. The class, taught by Elizabeth Gordon, assistant professor

GREENEVILLE A man whose public and private life exemplifies
the Civic Arts in action was presented Tusculum College's Distinguished
Service Award for the year 2002 on April 27 at the college's annual
President's Dinner. Thomas J. Garland was described by Tusculum
College President Dolphus E. Henry, in presenting the award, as
"a man of multiple capabilities, broad interests, and natural leadership
skills" who is a leader in civic life, government, commerce, and

Day Celebration brings 250 elementary students to campus
GREENEVILLE The Earth Day 2002 Celebration on April 22
began with a little uncertainty weather-wise and preparations were
made to move the more than 30 exhibits inside. However, as the sky
cleared, student volunteers mobilized to set up exhibits in front
of the Niswonger Commons, beside Haynes Hall and in the lawn between

Student Art Exhibition opens April 8
GREENEVILLE The current exhibition season at the Allison
Gallery on the Tusculum College campus will end with a display of

Local
farmer gets help from Tusculum class in debris removal from flood-damaged
fields
GREENEVILLE At a time when most farmers are plowing for
spring planting, Charles Cutshall is using his tractor to remove
logs and debris from what used to be a fertile field. Tusculum College
students in Judy Hardin's Citizenship and Social Change: Theory
and Practice course are among the volunteers who have helped during
the past few months in the clean-up effort on Cutshall's farm along
Asheville Highway near the North Carolina state line. Cutshall's
barn, sawmill, two bridges and a tobacco field were washed away
in flooding last August. [03/15/02]
Seward
to be focus of lecture March 18 at Tusculum College
GREENEVILLE William Henry Seward and Alaska will be forever
linked in history books, but the purchase of the northernmost territory
of the United States is just one of his accomplishments as Secretary
of State in post-Civil War America. Those accomplishments as part
of President Andrew Johnson's Cabinet will be the focus of a lecture
at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 18, at Tusculum College. [03/11/02]

dates set for 'Romeo & Juliet' performances

New dates have been set for the upcoming performances of
"Romeo & Juliet" by A.C.T. (Actors Coming Together). The production
by local high school students will open on Sunday, March 17, with
a 2 p.m. matinee in the auditorium of the Annie Hogan Byrd Fine

Religious community's acceptance of sport explored in first lecture
of 'Theologian-in-Residence' series
GREENEVILLE "I suppose everyone watched the Super Bowl,
but did anyone go for a walk in a graveyard after the game? If you

in their graves." With this question, Dr. William Baker opened Tusculum
College's 12th annual "Theologian-in-Residence" series on Tuesday
morning (Feb. 5). In the lecture that followed, Dr. Baker described
the evolution of sports from an activity shunned by the early American

important is quality child care?' Tusculum students explore question
in Service-Learning class
GREENEVILLE Making quality child care a reality for more
Greene County children is the aim of two projects completed by the
fifth block service-learning class. The 17 students in the "Service
Learning in Greeneville and Greene County" course divided into two
groups to complete their projects. One worked with three local industries
to conduct a survey about child care needs of their employees with
the results to be used by the companies in making a decision of
whether to establish a day care facility. The other group developed
a brochure to inform parents why quality child care is important

Handel's
'Messiah' to be focus of lecture Feb. 10
GREENEVILLE The Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's "Messiah"
is one of the most recognizable pieces of music in the world, but
it is just a small part of the oratorio that masterfully articulates
the Biblical account of Jesus' life as a work of art. The theological
coherence and the brilliant musical expression contained in George
F. Handel's most famous work will be explored in a lecture by Dr.
David Hendricksen, professor of music at Tusculum, at 4 p.m. Sunday,
Feb. 10, in room 46 (choir room) of the Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts
Building. Dr. Hendricksen will be introduced by Judy Henry, representing
the college.

F. Harrison Lamons, a longtime friend of Tusculum College
and an active leader for many years on the Tusculum Board of Trustees,
died Wednesday, Jan. 16, after a period of declining health.

Tennessee Children's Dance Ensemble will perform at Tusculum College

month anniversary of a fire that gutted the office of the Knoxville-based
professional modern dance company and damaged its rehearsal space.
