Collins named to American Association of Museums committee

George Collins, director of museum program and studies at Tusculum College, was recently appointed Southeastern Museums Conference representative to the Committee on Museum Professional Training of the American Association of Museums.

This nationwide committee touches on all aspects of museum training and serves as a clearing house for professional training and development information. In addition, the national committee and regional representatives coordinate workshops and seminars at professional conferences.

Collins joined the Tusculum College staff in August 2000, and has more than 30 years experience in the museum field. He has served as director of historical interpretation at Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, director of programs at the New York State Historical Association, and acting president of Genesee Country Village and Museum in Mumford, N.Y. He is also executive director of the Mountain State Railroad and Logging Historical Association in Cass, W.Va.

Tusculum's Department of Museum Program and Studies is responsible for the museum studies undergraduate degree program, the Doak House Museum, the Andrew Johnson Museum and Library, and the College Archives. The Museum Studies academic program is one of only a few in the United States that gives students an opportunity to earn an undergraduate degree in the field.
