Students, staff remember Jill Lucas on her birthday
A group of students, faculty, and staff gathered on July 11 in front of the Niswonger Commons for a informal memorial service to remember the life of Jill Lucas on what would have been her 22nd birthday. Lucas, a popular student on campus and a member of the volleyball team, died last October as the result of a traffic accident. As people gathered for the service, which was organized by student Jamie Johnson, students and staff signed a card to be sent to Lucas' parents in Indiana, and some wrote "Happy Birthday" and other messages about their memories of Jill on balloons that were released at the end of the service, as shown above. A poem about Lucas, written by volleyball coach Beth Birky, was read during the service. Some of Lucas' co-workers from Applebee's Neighborhood Bar & Grill in Greeneville also attended the service, bringing balloons from the restaurant. The foyer of the restaurant is decorated with Tusculum College athletic memorabilia with a framed photo of Lucas prominently displayed. (Tusculum College photo)
