'The Journey' and its director to be featured on college's service day
What happens when you travel across the country interviewing some of the nation's most influential and colorful personalities as well as everyday folks about life's biggest questions?
Eric Saperston and his crew of three produced a film, "The Journey," chronicling their adventure doing just that. The film will be shown at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, in the auditorium of the Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Building on the Tusculum College campus. A question-and-answer session with Saperston will follow the screening.
The event is part of Nettie Fowler McCormick Service Day at Tusculum College. On this day, the campus - students, faculty, and staff - come together to provide a day of service in the community, ranging from landscaping around a school to hosting a picnic lunch for senior citizens to cleaning trails in the Cherokee National Forest.
The public, particularly church youth groups and other organizations with high-school age members, are invited to the event, featuring the film documenting Saperston's and his crew's three years of living in a Volkswagen Bus and conducting interviews of CEOs to celebrities to everyday people.
After graduating from college in 1993, Saperston bought a 1971 VW Bus and decided to follow the Grateful Dead and work a ski season in Aspen to give himself a break between his studies and beginning his career. Challenged by his college mentor to make something more meaningful out of his journey, Saperston began calling some of the most powerful people in the world and asking them out for a cup of coffee.
Former President Jimmy Carter, former Texas Governor Ann Richards, Home Depot co -founder Bernie Marcus, actor Billy Crystal, and actor Henry Winkler are among those who agreed to meet Saperston and give their advice on leading a successful life.
The event is part of the 2002-03 performance and lecture series sponsored by Tusculum College's Acts, Arts, Academia program in association with Greeneville Community Concerts. Tusculum's Campus Life division, the Service-Learning Center, and the college's administration are also sponsoring the event.
Admission is $5 per person. A special group rate is available to groups that contact Arts Outreach before the event, and high school students who show their student IDs will be admitted free.
