OLIC classes collect donations to assist seriously injured student

These students in Mary Barkley-Ballard's "Our Lives in Community (OLIC)" class collect donations Tuesday morning (Sept. 10) at a roadblock on the Erwin Highway near campus. The roadblocks were the first campus-wide effort to raise funds to help pay medical costs of Tusculum student Lisa Cannon and her family. Lisa suffered serious injuries in a traffic accident in Savannah, Ga., as she was traveling to return to campus for the fall semester. Members of her family also sustained serious injuries in the accident. Students in three OLIC courses manned collection sites at various locations throughout Greene County, including major intersections, shopping centers, and around elementary schools since Cannon is majoring in education. Students in the classes also went around to campus offices and departments to collect donations. Tuesday's fund-raising effort was coordinated by Mary Barkley-Ballard, Elizabeth Gordon, Corrine Nicolas and their OLIC classes, Jennifer Brooks, and students: Sue Lewis, Noah Grunweig, Jessica Smith (Lisa’s roommate), Jennifer Wilcox, and Nick Baumann. Further fund-raising efforts for Lisa and her family are planned during Homecoming 2002 activities on Sept. 20-21. (Tusculum College photo)
