Class project benefits Ronald McDonald House in Johnson City
How many aluminum cans and can tabs can you collect in 15 days? A class of 23 students at Tusculum College recently collected 244 pounds of cans and about 2.5 gallons of tabs in that time period as part of a project to benefit the Ronald McDonald House in Johnson City. On April 2, students in "Citizenship and Social Change: Theory and Practice" presented the tabs and a donation of $110 from the recycling of the cans to Rowena Bailey, sitting at center, executive director of the Ronald McDonald House. The course was taught by Ricki Kaplan, an adjunct professor of sociology at Tusculum. Bailey expressed appreciation for the students' efforts, noting that the house provides services for families in Northeast Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, and western North Carolina. Greene County ranks second for the number of families served by the Ronald McDonald House among the communities served in Northeast Tennessee, she said.
