TC Honors Athletes At Athletic Banquet

(Greeneville, Tenn.)---Shane Banks and Lydia Taylor were named the male and female athletes of the year held April 27 at Tusculum College’s annual athletic banquet.

Banks, a Stuart’s Draft, Va. native, averaged over 17 points per game on the hardwood while earning all-region honors for the 17-11 Pioneers. He is also a standout pitcher/first baseman as a member of the baseball team.

Taylor was an all-region selection after leading the Lady Pioneer basketball squad in scoring and rebounding. The ex-Sevier County H.S. standout averaged 15.0 ppg and 10.3 rebounds per contest in 1997-98.

Men’s basketball head coach Mike Hollowell earned the Art Argauer Coaching Award for the second time in his career. The 10th year coach led his squad to a 17-11 record with a roster that was dominated by underclassmen.

Senior golfer Allen Atchley was awarded the Walter Dette Spirit Award. The Greeneville native is a NAIA Academic All-American and finished fourth in the NAIA golf championships after his sophomore season and has led TC to three straight national tournament appearances.

Cross Country senior Robin Newberry garnered the female’s Duffield Award for academic achievement. Soccer’s Emilio Russo was the male Duffield honoree.

Most valuable players from each squad were also named during the night’s festivities.
