TC classes joining with the Second Harvest Food Bank to conduct a food and basic needs drive

Food Drive - Students
Students in "Citizenship and Social Change" are shown with the "barometer" that will measure their goal of bringing food and personal items to the needy.

Two of the college's "Citizenship and Social Change" classes, conducted by Marianne Reiff and Corinne Nicolas, are organizing a food and basic needs drive for Greeneville/Greene County. The students will work in conjunction with the Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee.

The students will conduct the drive on the college campus and at several locations in Greeneville. Those focusing on the campus community will collect food and personal care items in boxes placed throughout the campus between Monday, January 25th and Friday, January 29th, and at the basketball games on Tuesday, January 26th, in the Tusculum Alpine Arena.

Those focusing on the Greeneville community will be stationed at the following places from 9:30 a.m. - 12 noon on Wednesday and Thursday, January 27 and 28, and again on Saturday, January 30: Ingles, Winn-Dixie, Wal-Mart, all on the 11-E bypass; KMart, in the Greeneville Commons; and Food City, on the Snapps Ferry Road.

The classes are also seeking donations of personal care items from hotels, motels, and community organizations throughout Greeneville and the Tri-Cities area.

"We hope to meet the needs of the community, and we also hope that, through experience, the students will gain an understanding of service and responsibility to the community, while learning to work together towards a common goal," Nicolas said.

The class is designed to prepare students for a major service-learning project which is required for graduation from the college. Nicolas estimates that students in the class will complete 10-15 hours of public service.
