TC classes collect food and supplies for the needy
Nearly double their goal

It’s always a admirable thing when students meet their goals. It’s even better when they exceed their goals by nearly 100%.

Loading the Supplies
Four of the 29 students in "Citizenship and Social Change" load supplies into a Second Harvest truck.

When two Tusculum College "Citizenship and Social Change" classes first came up with the idea of organizing a food and basic needs drive for the Second Harvest Food Bank in Gray, Tennessee, they set a goal of gathering 33 boxes of supplies over the course of four days.

At the time several students asked “how are we ever going to get that many boxes?,” said Corrine Nicolas, who, along with Marianne Reiff, teaches one of the classes. “But after it was over they were saying things like ‘this is awesome,’ and ‘this is a huge success.’ They really have a very positive feeling about this experience.”

That’s because when the four days were up 60 boxes full of food and supplies were on their way to Second Harvest.

Ann Smith, Public Relations Coordinator for Second Harvest, was elated. "Companies and businesses do food drives for us, but it’s nothing compared to this," she said. "[The students] have done great.

"We want to be more involved with Greeneville and Greene County, and this is a big step for us... we were really very thrilled" she said.

The students conducted the drive from January 25-January 29 on the College campus and at several locations in Greeneville. They also gathered donations of personal care items from hotels, motels, and community organizations throughout Greeneville and the Tri-Cities area.

The food and supplies will now be distributed at locations throughout the East Tennessee area.
