Three hundred seventy-one graduates earned degrees from Tusculum College Saturday, Dec. 18, as the historic institution held its 1999 winter commencement in the Alpine Arena on the Greeneville campus.
The arena, which seats 2,800, was filled nearly to capacity for the event.
Within the Residential College, 26 students earned the Bachelor of Arts degree. Within the Professional Studies program, 196 students earned the Bachelor of Science in organizational management, 47 received the Master of Arts in organizational management, 91 received the Master of Arts in education with a K-12 concentration and 11 earned the Master of Arts in education with an adult education concentration.
Campus minister and associate professor of religion Dr. Stephen Weisz, as commencement speaker, welcomed the graduates to "a world on the threshold of a new millenium." In keeping with the civic arts and service-learning commitment of the college, Weisz encouraged the graduates to "think less of self and do more for others" and to recognize that "the other is also us."
Graduating seniors Emilio Russo, of Lafayette, Louisiana, and Jonas Hayes, of Akron, Ohio, performed the song "Oh Come, Oh Come, Emmanuel" in lieu of a traditional graduation address.
Russo, a biology/pre-medicine major, will enter medical school next year, while Hayes, an English major, will attend Princeton Divinity School in Princeton, New Jersey. Weisz commended both students for "inspiring the worship of Christ both on and off campus."
