Intramural athletes awarded

The Tusculum College Intramurals program finished up a year of "revival and development," in the words of director Dr. Kirpal Mahal, with an awards ceremony held May 6. "It's been a very successful year," Mahal commented as he thanked President Knott for supporting the program.

Overall there was a total of 313 student participants in the various intramural sports this year (with some students participating in more than one sport). That's up considerably from only a few years ago, when the intramural program was in need of some revitalization.

When Mahal saw the program languishing earlier this decade, he said, it was then that he told Dr. Knott he would like to begin working to revive it. Through his work not only the number of students grew, but this year the program received its first backing by a corporate sponsor, the Schick Razor Company. Only 100 college's in the nation receive this kind of backing, which included $2,500 worth of merchandise and t-shirts.

Also this year, the program began to makes waves on both a regional and national level. It was the first time a Tusculum College intramural team won the regional championship. The women's 3-on-3 basketball team achieved this honor, while the men's team was third in the region. And for the first time the program received a United States Tennis Association Grant, which is given to only 45 colleges in the South. The grant enabled Tusculum to raise over $2,000 for running a community tennis program. As a result of the success of this program, Tusculum will have a USTA sanctioned tennis tournament on its campus, the "Pioneer Classic," to be held August 6-9.

Mahal credits the student participants and his assistants with the revitalization of the intramural program. "If I had to give credit for the success of the program, I'd give it to the students," he said. "My role was just to lead and direct."

Kevin Washington, officiating coordinator, and Scott Rawlings, manager, were also especially pivotal in helping the program this year. "Those two students went beyond the call of duty," Mahal said.
