Scott Mashburn officially began his role on July 1, 1998, as Tusculum College’s new Dean of Students, a prospect which he hopes will allow for growth opportunities for both himself and the college.

After talking with Tusculum College administration, Mashburn concludes, “there seems to be some nice opportunities for me to create change and to enhance current existing programs.”

Mashburn comes to the College after having served as the Dean of Students at Carthage College, a four-year private liberal arts college in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Since 1996 he has supervised a staff of 48 which was responsible for housing, residence life, health and wellness, student activities, Greek affairs, service-learning, counseling, orientation, and judicial affairs. He was also involved with student recruitment, retention, and the first year student experience program.

Mashburn said that Tusculum’s smaller size will make it easier to do one activity he loves -- interacting with students. “That was one of the big attractors -- to know students on a more personal level,” he said. “The number of students will be a nice change of pace.”

Along with his wife, Kathi, and his two-year-old daughter, Kaitlin, Mashburn has moved into a house on the Tusculum College grounds. “So far I’m really enjoying the campus,” he said.

Before becoming Dean at Carthage, Mashburn previously served as an Associate Dean of Students, Hall Director, and Director of Housing and Facilities at the school. At the University of North Alabama he was Coordinator of Men’s Housing and Graduate Assistant to the Dean of Students.

Mashburn earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree at West Georgia College in Carrollton, Georgia in 1990, then went on to acquire his Master of Arts in Counseling in May, 1994, at the University of North Alabama in Florence, Alabama.

He is currently pursuing Doctorate in Education at University of Sarasota in Sarasota, Florida.
