Dempster Elected to Tusculum College Board of Trustees Lamar Cowan Dempster

Lamar Cowan Dempster '48, of Knoxville, Tennessee, was elected to the Board of Trustees of Tusculum College at the Board's winter meeting on February 13.

After attending Tusculum College, Mrs. Dempster began a career at Dempster Brothers, Inc. in Knoxville, an engineering firm. There she met her future husband, Thomas Cameron Dempster, Jr. when he returned from the war.

"We are delighted to welcome Lamar to the Board," said Stanley R. Welty, Jr. '51, chairman of the Board. "She is a generous friend of the College and has already demonstrated her commitment to helping the College meet its goals in the coming years."

In preparation for her candidacy, Mrs. Dempster reflected on the College and its mission. She wrote: "Tusculum College has a small college atmosphere. It is centrally located in the eastern United States, with a diverse student body, both geographically and socioeconomically. All these factors give the College strength for its third century of service."

The Dempsters are members of the First Presbyterian Church of Knoxville, where Mrs. Dempster has served as yearbook chairperson of the Women of the Church. From 1975 to 1996, she was chair of the Board of Trustees of the Confederate Memorial Hall in Knoxville. Currently, she serves as treasurer of the Panorama Condominium Association.

A mechanical engineer, Mr. Dempster is a retired vice-president of Dempster Brothers, Inc. The family business developed the Dempster Dumpster, which is widely used in the waste management field. The Dempsters have one child, Melinda Dempster Davis of Knoxville. With the election of Mrs. Dempster, twenty-one of the College's forty-one trustees are alumni of the institution.
