Tusculum College, the Volunteer Center of Greene County and the United Way are
seeking participants for Greene County's first ever "Week of Caring," set for
Friday, September 11, to Friday, September 18. The purpose of the project is
to give people of the local community a chance to volunteer for non-profit organizations
located in Greene County.

Two-hundred fifty major
and small businesses as well as 60 non-profit service agencies throughout the
county are being contacted for their input on deciding what service projects
are needed, as well as to seek volunteers. Volunteer groups will work in a team
of 3-12 people on a wide variety of projects which can be completed in a half-day
or full day. Projects might include anything from renovating a playground to
simply painting a fence or washing windows, according to the Volunteer Center
staff.
Mary Fitzpatrick, Director of the Volunteer Center of Greene County, pointed
out that the "Week of Caring" offers an excellent opportunity for a wide range
of community groups. For business groups, workshops focusing on management of
corporate volunteer programs will be offered, providing an opportunity for professional
development and team-building experiences. For school or youth groups, the Volunteer
Center plans to work with teachers in integrating community service with the
school curriculum.
Individuals are also encouraged to participate. Since many different kinds of
service activities will take place at widely varying times throughout the week,
"we're almost certain to match the schedule of any individual who wants to help.
It's very flexible," said Joyce Doughty, Community Outreach Liaison for Tusculum
College's Service Learning Center.
"Even if you just have an hour, you can accomplish a lot," Fitzpatrick said.
"We encourage all ages and all skill levels to participate." Volunteers are
also needed to help in organizing the effort.
The project is an extension of Tusculum College's annual McCormick Service Day,
September 11, when teams of students, faculty, and staff volunteer for projects
benefiting the community. In the past the volunteers have cleaned grave markers
at the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery, painted a building at the Cedar Creek
Learning Center, and built forms for a concrete walkway at Tusculum College.
Those interested in participating may call the Volunteer Center at (423) 639-9341
for more information.
