The mission of the Physical Education program is to prepare students qualified to seek employment in teaching Physical Education, coaching sports, recreational leadership, sport management, or wellness related and fitness enhancing fields. The following programs are offered to achieve this goal:

  • Teaching Licensure in Physical Education: Grades K-12
  • Sports Science Major
  • Sport Management Major
  • Coaching Minor
  • Coaching Endorsement

The Physical Education teaching licensure major is approved by the Tennessee State Department of Education. The required 158 semester hours for this licensure include 54 semester hours in Physical Education, 36 semester hours in Professional Education and 68 semester hours in general education.

The Tennessee Department of Education recommends that candidates seeking K-12 Physical Education licensure also prepare for licensure in an additional area.

The Sport Management program combines knowledge and skills required for leaders in athletics, sport business, recreation and fitness. By integrating management and marketing principles with sport and fitness components, students are prepared for job opportunities in sport management, recreation, athletics and fitness and/or prepared for graduate studies in Sport Management.

The coaching minor and coaching endorsement may be added to any other program of study at the College and can provide useful preparation for those who anticipate coaching in the future.

Persons desiring to major in Physical Education should be regularly admitted to the College.
